Sal Island	Sal Island is the most popular island and is home to most tourism as well as the main airport. It is a relatively flat island which has become popular due to its fantastic white sandy beaches. The main town is Santa Maria, where there are restaurants, bars, music and nightlife. Pastel shaded houses and shops line the streets. It is a haven for sun lovers and beachcombers with a good selection of water sports centres, offering, sailing, surfing, windsurfing, fishing and diving. Santiago Island	Santiago Island is the largest island and includes the capital of the republic, Praia, which is a distinctively African town, vibrant and pulsating with a thriving market and like Sal it has an international airport. Boa Vista Island	Boa Vista Island offers two magnificent long powder white sand beaches (Chaves 15km long and Santa Monica 5km long). It is the nearest island to the African coast and has a backdrop of high sand dunes. The main town of Sal Rei is a sleepy place that comes alive at dusk. Boa Vista also has some excellent water sports on offer along with jeep safaris, quad bikes and horse riding. Sao Vicente Island	Sao Vicente Island is a very interesting island with a distinctly European feel, which has attracted people such as musicians and artists mingling with the tourists that visit the island. There are some beautiful beaches, particularly attractive to windsurfers, with San Pedro named as one of the worlds finest for speed windsurfing. Mindelo, the main town, is relatively lively. Maio Island	Maio Island is flat like Sal and Boa Vista and again has some fantastic powder white and beaches. Maio is a tranquil and almost forgotten island with vast, deserted white beaches and only about 6000 inhabitants, mainly living in the capital, Vila do Maio, which is next to one of the longest beaches on the archipelago. Vila do Maio is on the south-west corner of the island, so is protected from the prevailing north-easterly breeze. On the deserted beaches sea turtles can be found laying their eggs in the summer. Fogo Island	Fogo Island is a volcanic island in the Sotavento group of Cape Verde. It has the highest peaks of the group, rising to 2800 m (10,000 ft) above sea level at Mount Fogo. It is also one of the greener and wetter islands of Cape Verde, and all the Cape Verde wine is made here, as well as much of the farming. The people of Fogo are very friendly and it is virtually crime free. Deep sea fishing is some of the best in the world, along with other islands in Cape Verde. Santo Antao Island	Santo Antao island is the most beautiful island in Cape Verde, especially if you like mountains and gorges and stunning scenery. It is just an hour ferry from San Vicente, and no visitor can help being overwhelmed by the beautiful scenery where the colours, shapes and vegetation as well as the local wildlife are all so striking. Sao Nicalau Island	Sao Nicolau island is one of the Barlavento islands of Cape Verde. The flat areas and hills dominate most of the coastline and the central part.
